First of all, I am a Nevisian, and in this post, I am going to tell you about Nevis.
You are going to get a local perspective, so be confident that what I am about to share with you is what makes me happy on my island.
This is my perspective on what makes Nevis unique.
There are some people who think that all Caribbean islands are the same. They are not.
Taking a trip to Nevis might be the most enjoyable way to adjust such a misconception if you have it.
Our history and cultures are different. If you consider Nevis’ history, you will notice that it is bigger and richer than expected, and there are so many surprising stories to be told about it.
For example, why in the world is there Jewish history on this small island? Why would a tremendously popular Broadway play about an American founding father cause my island to become a bucket-list destination?
And why are there so many “firsts” on Nevis?
The first hotel built in the Caribbean, and the Caribbean’s first non-denominational church where blacks and whites worshipped together.
The answers to these questions are surprising and fascinating stories in and of themselves. History has shaped our culture on Nevis, and the fact that we live and work in our history is something that I do not take for granted.
I love sharing our history. Our history even influences our food culture. We have a seasonal food culture, but it is not a normal seasonality. It has nothing to do with the weather.
Let me explain…
There are some foods that you will not ever taste unless it is Easter or Christmas. This is not because the ingredients are unavailable at any other times of the year, it is simply that they are not eaten except during those times of the year, or week.
If you want to go on a near-impossible mission when you visit Nevis, try finding goat water (an amazing local goat stew), at an authentic local restaurant in the middle of the week.
You won’t find it, but it is almost everywhere on the weekends. All this culinary seasonality has been shaped by our history of survival and triumph.
The next thing I must tell you is that Nevis is a natural and very fruitful island. We have more mangoes than you could imagine. Mangoes are not the only fruits we have, but they are my favorite. I feel that mango season is the most wonderful time of the year because at that time I live almost exclusively on mangoes.
If you are planning to visit, come in the summer. That way you can enjoy all the mangoes, the delicious food, and immerse yourself in our history and culture.
